If you’re looking for a short easy to remember domain name but don’t want to pay for it then maybe this is for you, Scrooge. Visit www.co.cc , search for an available sub domain name and you might just get it for FREE. Most sub domains I searched for came up FREE, but some were asking $3 - $11. Keep trying you’ll find a freebie. So wait a minute, what’s the catch then? There is a small catch, but only a small one - With co.cc you’re getting a sub domain name, not an official second level domain name.

This service is the equivalent of me giving you anyname.urbanskaters.co.uk or anyname.urbanskaters.com (the anyname part is called the subdomain, the urbanskaters part is the second level domain, the .co.uk and .com are the top level domains), but because the second level domain here is co and the top level domain is .cc , when you put co and .cc together it looks very similar to co.uk (but remember co.uk is a top level domain in itself, whereas co.cc combines a second level and top level. Hence urbanskaters.co.cc looks no different to urbanskaters.co.uk. Still not making sense? Try typing just co.uk into your browsers address bar. Then co.cc , to see what happens.

The .co.cc domain is not an official hierarchy; it is merely a standard domain like any other and is used for a free URL redirection service. - Wikipedia

You initially get 2 FREE “Sub” domains but for a small donation of $10 (about £5) you get a further 100. You must either point each subdomain at an existing website (Forwarding) or edit the DNS to point to your own server. Failing to do either within 48hrs will lose you your subdomain. Just keep that in mind!

Thanks to Dave for recommending the co.cc service.

If you’re thinking about signing up to a mobile broadband service, then please stop and seriously reconsider. I’ve been using a Vodafone mobile broadband express card now for about 6 months and it’s hopeless. The service is constantly slow (nowhere near the 7.2MBps qouted) with pages taking several seconds to a minute or more to load. During certain hours of the day some websites (like Facebook) become unavailable and my GPRS status will drop leaving me with a naff 54kps connection.

Don’t be fooled by the the unlimited usage packages either as they come with small print. It’s called fair usage policy, so please read that carefully as I found recently that if I go over a certain download limit, they reduce my bandwidth. Which is reduced further if I continue to use up more bandwidth than they REALLY want me to. Unlimited, yeah right!

One more thing that I’m terribly unhappy with is the rubbish support that Vodafone offer. I recently noticed that whenever I use the express cards preloaded software to manage my connection that my PC gradually slows down to a complete halt. On further investigation I noticed that the Vodafone software was opening hundreds and hundreds of ports (to the localhost, so no real danger I guess) called DOOM.

So I email them and ask what this DOOM process is and why it scans from port 1000 right up to and beyond port 7000. I get a reply saying “We don’t know…”. WHAT???? So I call them up and get told the same old garbage. So let me get this straight. Vodafone release a mobile broadband express card which when plugged in executes a programme that starts scanning through thousands of ports on your local machine. Yet they don’t know why or what it is.

How frustrating! So anyway, I phone back and tell them to stop messing about and give me a straight answer. I then get told, “We don’t know exactly why, but the senior techs tell us that it’s something to do with monitoring”. Oh bloody hell, forget this. If Vodafone don’t even know what it is, what it’s doing or why they chose to call it DOOM then I’m stumped for an answer to.

Below is a screenshot taken during a Netstat run through command prompt. It clearly shows the ports being scanned by the DOOM process. It’s scary to think that a company can get away with not knowing how their own product works, let alone calling a network process DOOM!

I’ve read reports all over the Internet about poor connectivity and bandwidth issues with various mobile broadband services. While I think that broadband services on Smartphones is a great idea, I’m still not convinced it works for laptops connecting via mobile express cards etc.
